I have a '94 Corolla. The charge indicator light went on this morning and stayed on. I'm 60 miles from my mechanic, and so far the only thing I've noticed is sluggishness in the power windows, and a dimming of the clock display. What are the chances that I'll make it to the mechanic before the car loses power completely?
Not a good bet. If the charge warning light came on solid, and the lights dimmed as the windows slowed down, you're not going to get far at all. It sounds like a complete or near complete failure of the charging system, and you're now running on battery voltage alone.
You might want to take a look under the hood to be sure that the alternator belt is still there, and if so, is it adjusted properly. Also make sure the battery terminals are clean and secure, and all of the alternator wiring is intact.
If everything looks copasetic then have the vehicle towed to a shop that can test the charging system in the right manner. You're probably going to be replacing the alternator.
