Testing the camshaft position sensor

I have a 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada Smart Trak 4.2L

I got a P0172, P0340, and P0420

I want to test the camshaft sensor on Bank 1.

Do you know the location of this sensor and the steps to test it?

Thanks

Re: Testing the camshaft position sensor

You have three codes; the PO172 and the PO420 are related to a problem causing a rich condition. The third code the PO340 is the cam sensor code.

The cam sensor has three wires on it. It has 12 volt wire, a reference wire and a ground.
Make sure you have 12 volts and the ground, the reference wire is a 5 volt wire, you should have this when the engine is running. I am sending you a picture of the location and a wire schematic of the cam sensor.

If you have a good scan tool you can read the data for the cam sensor, this would be a big help.

After diagnosing the cam sensor erase all the codes and see what codes come back.
