Transmission fluid leaking when in 4 wheel drive

I have an '03 GMC Sonoma 6 cylinder, extended cab, auto, 4WD. Towed the boat the other day in 4WD. Today I noticed transmission fluid on the floor and on the under side of truck. Checked fluid cold (not running) it said to add fluid. So I checked fluid hot no reading. Added 16 oz. but still no reading. Do not want to overfill.
Any idea why fluid leaks, and should I fill to get reading?

Thanks, Mike

Re: Transmission fluid leaking when in 4 wheel drive

The fluid is checked running, and best when hot. Yes, keep filling until in the cross-hairs.

Then you gotta get under the truck and find the leak. It may be coming from a number of places.
