Transmission failure

I own a 2006 MDX with only 60,000 miles. The vehicle has always performed very well. About 3 weeks ago, I noticed that when the car was running that it sounded a little bit different. Not what I would consider alarmingly different, just a little different from ordinary. About 1 week later, the car was slow to engage when the gear shifted was placed in D5. About a half second delay. After that the car ran fine. Last week, I had the transmission fluid changed hoping that would resolve the issue, but it did not. Very rapidly, the car has gotten much worse. Now, when engaged in any of the forward drive gears, the car struggles to engage, especially uphill. I don't know if this sounds like a total transmission failure or if maybe the transmission cooler has failed.

Any suggestions?

Re: Transmission failure

It sounds like a pressure problem. It could be related to shift solenoids, worn direct clutch pack or faulty seal.

The only way is to tell for sure is to have a transmission shop or Acura dealer take a pressure test and also scan the computer for any transmission trouble codes. If it is a pressure problem then it will be confirmed during the pressure test and will probably mean a transmission overhaul.

Having the transmission diagnosed is the first step, then you can decide which repair to proceed with once you have a positive answer.

Re: Transmission failure

Honda has had some transmission issues over the past 10 years.

The symptoms you've described most likely indicate an internal failure which will require replacement or rebuild.

But you've got an '06 with 60k miles. That means you're either still covered under the powertrain warranty, or just slightly out.

Bring it to an Acura dealer so they can confirm a re-manufactured unit is the correct repair. If you're out of warranty, there's a good chance they will still cover it, or at least help on the cost through "good will".
