2wd differential cover hole pattern

I have a 1994 Safari 2wd which has rear end noise. I have removed the differential cover for a quick inspection and I am now attempting to replace the cover. I have not been able to find a replacement gasket and I'm using RTV gasket maker instead. My problem is that I noticed 2 holes on each side of the casing (not bolt holes) that appear to be circulation holes for gear oil that are blocked by the cover and this seems to be just "wrong". Is there a problem here or is everything normal? I have not changed anything so I'm wondering how these holes function.

Re: 2wd differential cover hole pattern

That is normal for the holes to be blocked by the cover and gasket. Just use the RTV sealer on the differential case and install the cover you will not have a problem.

Re: 2wd differential cover hole pattern

Should I put RTV completely around the 2 holes in question?

Re: 2wd differential cover hole pattern

Yes, just like the gasket would cover the housing. Just put the RTV around the housing generously but not too thick.

Make sure the RTV covers the entire metal surface of the housing just like the gasket would do then put the cover on and tighten the bolts and torque to specs.

Re: 2wd differential cover hole pattern

Thanks for the help. Now I can get back to the problem of finding where the noise (clatter) is coming from.
