Last week I boosted a neighbor and shortly after I am unable to start my van. Could you please tell me the most common types of damage to the electrical system so I could start to try and fix it. The battery is dead.
Thanks in advance
The first thing to check is the charging system. Sometimes the charging system gets pushed to the max and may blow out the voltage regulator or diodes in the alternator.
Get the van started and put a volt meter on the battery, if it is not charging check all fuses first. If they all check out good then the alternator is probably at fault.
The voltage regulator is usually located in the PCM in the newer cars; if this is the problem then it could be a costly repair.
If you are able to remove the alternator, Auto Zone will check it for free, this way you won't waste money on a part you don't need.
Keep us informed on your progress.
Be sure and check the large fuses typically in the underhood fuse box. Often times when jumper cables are hooked up in reverse, it will blow the high amperage main fuse and kill all current to the vehicle.
Thank you both very much. I will try to check these things and report back.
Check out the fuse and try getting your dead battery replaced. In case you are absolutely tired of trying these call a mechanic to get it fixed.
