replaced driver side head, how to align timing gear

please help me.i have rebuilt a hundred motors OLD STYLE  motors .I have never worked with over head cams
How do i align everything timing gears I get # 1 up with mark on dead center ....and????? please help

Every engine is different. First you need the year and the size of the engine. Is it gas or diesel?

What ever engine you are working on you need the Service Manual to look up where the marks are located.

There are also special tools that are used to help not only align the cam shafts but hold them in place so they don't move.

This is so they are not installed one tooth off on the belt. It is not much different then doing the old timing chains. Once you get used to it, it's not a bad job.

Get back to me with more accurate information and we will go from there.
