Pointing the front wheels straight ahead

When disarming the air bag system on a Chevy C2500 pickup, why is it necessary to point the front wheels straight ahead?

Thanks

Re: Pointing the front wheels straight ahead

Pointing the wheels straight ahead before disarming the airbag would be if you plan on going past the steering wheel removal stage. If you are not an experienced professional you should not be touching anything with the air bag system (SIR).

The safety issues with the air bag system should be strictly followed!

Severe injury or even death can result from unexpected or accidental deployment of the air bag.

Re: Pointing the front wheels straight ahead

I've seen the same set of instructions for disarming the air bag system on service manuals for different makes and models, even how to handle the bag module once it's off the steering wheel, when replacing the ignition switch, lock cylinder and such. But don't know the technical reason for it. Thanks a lot TechHelp2.
