Extended Warranty on Excessive Frame Rust

Question:

I was wondering if you knew anything about the recall of all 1995-2000 Toyota Tacoma pickups for frame rust. They are buying pickups back if the frames are unsafe. I haven't read anything in any of the magazines and it seems that if it were one of the American car companies it would be everywhere. I was just wondering why it was so hush.

Answer:

It's not a recall or a technical service bulletin; it's a voluntary extension of Toyota's new car warranty policy involving certain 1995-2000 Tacoma, about 813,000 of them. According to Toyota, there have been a number of complaints from Tacoma owners in reference to excessive rust corrosion and perforation of the vehicle's frames -- particularly in northern, high road salt regions.

Toyota states that trucks which fall within a specific vehicle identification number range did not receive adequate corrosion resistant protection during production. Therefore, the original frame rust through coverage of 3 years/36,000 miles has been extended to 15 years/unlimited mileage. If your truck fits the model range, and exhibits excessive frame rust, schedule an inspection at a local Toyota service department.

If the service department determines that excessive corrosion exists, as per Toyota's inspection guidelines, a secondary inspection by a Toyota representative may be required. Toyota will then determine, at their option, if the frame will be repaired or the vehicle bought back at 150% of the "excellent condition" Blue Book retail value (regardless of what shape it's in). Although, repair of significant frame damage is never a good practice and it's believed that most, if not all vehicles with excessive rust will be bought back.

Toyota is allowing removal of any aftermarket add-ons, and a vehicle loaner program will be in effect to help with the inspection and buy-back process. The extended warranty doesn't seem very hush, but it is recent, going into effect March 7, 2008 with notification letters in the mail shortly thereafter. If you believe your Tacoma may be involved but have not received notification, call Toyota customer assistance at 1-888-270-9371 or contact your local dealer.

As long as the truck is not past 15 years from the dates of 1995 to 2000, Toyota should warranty the frame. If you have issues with the dealer you can call Toyota customer support at 800-331-4331.

I just brought my Tacoma in on Dec 14th, they said it failed inspection and would replace my frame. It's a 2006 with 235,000 miles. I was told it takes about 8 months to get the frame and they would have the truck for 3 days once frame was in. I was never offered a buy back, they said it was no cost to me but if I wanted anything else done at that time I would only pay for parts.

I'd start calling the government. I'm finding a lot of people who were never notified that their truck should be inspected. Sounds like a scam to me. So many years of their trucks getting recalled for the same thing. Evidently didn't learn.

Toyota is extending a rust perforation warranty covering 1995 to 2000 Tacoma truck frames for a period of 15 years from original sale, with no mileage limitation, for corrosion damage resulting in perforation of the frame material.

I would make sure they will help you because your truck is a 2002 putting it out of the extended warranty.

Call this number and talk to Toyota yourself and explain to them what you did and where you took the truck to. Have your VIN number on hand when you call. Get the information first hand from Toyota to see if you qualify.

Just heard about this from a neighbor. I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma. I have a friend that is a service writer in KC and he says my truck should qualify. I live in Iowa now and Toyota dealership here says they have nothing on the frame/rust warranty. We will see how it goes-don't really want to leave it in another state for however long it takes to get done but might be worth it.
I never received any notices regarding this either.

RE: Isiah, This is from the Toyota website.

Toyota Announces Customer Support Program For 1995-2000 Tacoma Pickups
March 07, 2008
March 7, 2008 - Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A., Inc. will launch a Customer Support Program to extend warranty coverage on certain 1995 through 2000 model year Tacoma truck frames.

Toyota has received reports regarding a small number of Tacoma vehicles exhibiting excessive corrosion of the frame, causing perforation of the metal. The frames of some vehicles may not have adequate corrosion protection. When exposed to severe environmental conditions, including accumulation of road salts, these vehicles may develop corrosion beyond normal surface rust commonly found on metal after years of exposure.

Instances of this condition are isolated and largely confined to states which use salt for winter de-icing of roads. However, to assure customers of its commitment to satisfaction, Toyota is extending a rust perforation warranty covering 1995 to 2000 Tacoma truck frames for a period of 15 years from original sale, with no mileage limitation, for corrosion damage resulting in perforation of the frame material.

Should a customer's vehicle experience this condition, they will be requested to present it to any Toyota dealer for inspection. Upon confirmation of rust perforation, Toyota will, at its option, repair or repurchase the vehicle. If it is determined that no rust perforation is present, the extended warranty will be in effect for 15 years from original sale.

It is important to note that this is not a recall or special service campaign. The extended frame corrosion warranty provides goodwill assistance to owners who have experienced, or may encounter, frame problems as a direct result of rust perforation. Owners will be notified by first class mail beginning mid-March 2008. Customers with questions or concerns should contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Does anyone know if he dealership or Toyota is taking and repairing or replacing or buying back 1995-2000 Toyota's after the warranty?

I called the service manager he said to bring it in. They will inspect it. He said that he is familiar with the rust issue and has only seen a few. I'm in northern Arizona. He also said that he will do all he can in dealing with Toyota. As far as pushing for help.
I'll keep you all informed. I have a "98 Tacoma.

WOW! I see this problem has been going on for a while. But believe it or not I just found out there was a problem with the frame. I saw a huge crack in my frame of my 1996 Tacoma, while loading center blocks in the rear. i immediately took it to my local dealer which have always done service on the truck. But they never said anything about a extended warranty to me about the frame.
In 2009 I had given the truck to my father who has since passed so I now have it back. The warranty also states that the truck had to have a certain numbers of miles if your truck exceeded that number i'm not sure what the number was, then you would not have received a letter of the issue.
This to me is a real serious flaw and dangerous to anyone who doesn't know what they're transporting their family or love ones in.

Have 2000 Tacoma bought new, has 52K miles.
Had it inspected 2 times, told it was OK (3 years ago).
They could never pay me what the truck is worth, basic like new. I did not want it bought back.
Put new muffler on today, noticed the box frame section on drivers side at front hanger of rear spring is rusted away. A 6" high, 15" section that has fuel lines attached to it is laying loose between fuel tank and frame.
My 15 years is up in 09/15.
I heard maybe now they are just paying blue book, not the 150% deal any more. Anybody have updated info on this?
I`m in WV.

I recently purchased a used 2001 Tacoma 115k. Great looking truck, had it put on the rack and the whole frame, like others have stated, is rusted. I went to my local dealer for them to put in a claim and see. Also I called Toyota customer care and I'm now waiting to hear back. What do they want? folks to just pawn them off to someone else like musical chairs until life is lost like they need more bad publicity? They know they sold America a bad, dangerous batch of trucks. Just fix or buy them.

the answer to the question by Alex is only partially true. I owned a 2001 4d taco 4x4 and would not have known about the warranty except I hit a deer. The body shop told me about the warranty issue. I took it to toyota dealer and it qualified for a frame "replacement". I got a rental paid by toyota for one month. The frame, brake lines, ball joints and hoses were replaced at no cost. It was like new. To my understanding the buy backs were only for those trucks that it would have cost more to replace the frame than to buy back. This involved all tacos 1995 through 2004. I never received notification from toyota and no one else I have talked to (several) received notice. The manager of the body shop in Ohio told me none were sent out and he was leaving a note on peoples windshield when he saw one although he was not allowed to. Loved that truck and never should have sold it.

If Toyota does not cover any damage done by rust and corrosion your best bet is to find a professional welder, or even anyone that can weld as well as a professional and weld up the cracks and holes. I know a few people that can, but I live in Vermont and have no idea where any of you are from. I have seen Toyota frames welded back together and last the life of the truck

I bought my 1996 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 from a mechanic. According to the VIN Search, it had NEVER been taken to a Toyota dealership - EVER. The search only brought up oil changes over the last few years from random oil change places.

I called Toyota about the rust problem, but they said there isn't a recall that will benefit me (time expired?) I think Toyota won't touch it with a 10 foot pole now.

Any suggestions?

I just found 3 pin holes in my 2002 Tacoma frame which is really rusty I have a frame inspection tomorrow, what exactly do they do during the inspection? I called Toyota customer service and asked what would be done about a pin hole and she said it is up to the dealer to fix or leave it that way until it gets worst. I had the toyota undercoating done which I think they did to buy time, I just hate to end up with junk after the 15 years are up if they keep saying it is ok then year 15 I have a truck with a big hole in the frame.

Just a quick note on the frame change-out on my 2001 Tacoma. Toyota covered most of the work, the change-out came with new lower control arms, rear springs and brake lines. Plus a few other parts that were trashed while taking it apart. Toyota's end of the bill was $12,750 plus the two week truck rental. I had them perform about another 6,000 in parts and labor. Water pump, timing belt, exhaust, all bushing, u-joints. all new front suspension, and now it is in the body shop for a complete makeover and paint. So why spend $25,000 on a 12 year old truck? I live in Northern Canada, and use it to plow, and enjoy the outdoors and you would be hard to find what is basically a new vehicle for 12,000 dollars. Thanks Toyota.

Not sure if there's a difference in the body rust warranty between US and Canadian sold Tacoma. Check the trucks original warranty booklet, or contact customer support @ 800-331-4331.

The extended rust warranty only involves 1995 - 2000 models.

Hi Jamey,

I'm assuming the delivery date on the truck put it past 15 years old. And that was the end of the extended warranty covering the rust-through condition.

Toyota upped the coverage from the original 3 years, 36k miles, to 15 years, unlimited mileage.

If you're shortly over the 15 year mark, you can contact Toyota customer support and push for "goodwill" coverage. This may, or may not help.

I would be going straight to seller and get my money back...

They gave me a flat out no also, but it was a factory defect from the beginning and a safety issue. I called and they have no goodwill. I asked the rep if she would let her child ride in a Tacoma and she wouldn't answer. A frame should last at least 25 years. I saw a '53 ford pickup that was in a field for years, never restored and looked horrible, but the frame had a small amount of service rust.

Now I have a worthless '95 Tacoma truck that I paid a lot of money for. Toyota couldn't care less.

Take it back to the Toyota service department and explain the situation to the service manager. He will most likely want to re-inspect the truck, and if it fails, request approval from the Toyota district representative.

Technically, they're not obligated, but it's possible they may fit-you-in on a goodwill basis.

It never hurts to ask.

Hi Bonnie:

The policy on the 1995-2000 Tacoma is not a recall but an extended warranty. Updates are the inclusion of the 2001-2004 model years. Unlike the earlier models there is no buy-back, instead they will inspect the frame and do needed repairs such as additional rust protection treatment, rear cross member replacement and possibly more extensive frame reconditioning.

Added to the mix is a recall on 2000-2003 full-size Tundra pickups suffering from similar frame rust conditions -- again, no buy-backs, only needed repairs.

Schedule a frame rust inspection at a local Toyota dealer, and see what they find.
